Mandate Marine Wildlife Education for Hawaii Visitors

Mandate Marine Wildlife Education for Hawaii Visitors
The Issue
In 2022, I witnessed a horrifying incident in Hawaii. Despite numerous informational signs and verbal warnings, a woman was pummeled by a mother Hawaiian Monk seal. The woman claimed she was unaware of the risks and regulations surrounding marine wildlife interaction. This incident underscores the urgent need for more effective education on marine wildlife protection for all visitors to Hawaii.
Hawaii is home to an array of unique marine species, many of which are endangered or protected under law. The Hawaiian Monk seal is one such species; it's estimated that only about 1,400 remain in the wild (NOAA Fisheries). Interaction with humans poses significant threats to these creatures' survival and well-being.
To prevent future incidents and protect our precious marine life, we propose adding a line item regarding marine wildlife protection to the State of Hawaii Department of Agriculture Plant & Animal Declaration form. This addition will ensure every visitor receives explicit information about respecting local fauna.
By signing this petition, you're supporting efforts to safeguard both human lives and our invaluable marine ecosystems from harm due to ignorance or negligence. Please sign this petition today.
