Mandate Mackinac County Jail to Grant Medical Bond for Detained Patients

Mandate Mackinac County Jail to Grant Medical Bond for Detained Patients
The Issue
This petition relates to an urgent and deeply personal issue. My husband, a man who has not been convicted and is only awaiting trial for a non-violent crime, has been detained in Mackinac County Jail. His situation is unique and gravely critical because he was recently diagnosed with cancer for the second time. His current situation in jail severely limits his access to proper healthcare facilities necessary for his cancer treatment.
According to a study published in the American Journal of Public Health, incarceration can severely impact a person's health. The provision of healthcare services in jails is often deficient, failing to meet the healthcare needs of the inmates (American Journal of Public Health, 2011). In highly sensitive cases of serious and life-threatening diseases like cancer, adequate medical care and treatment are not just essential, they become a matter of survival.
All individuals, including those awaiting trial, have a right to healthcare. We believe Mackinac County Jail must allow for medical bonds in circumstances where the inmate's health is at severe risk. We ask for humanity, compassion, and a fair chance for my husband to fight his illness outside of jail walls. This is an urgent plea for justice.
We appeal to your sense of justice and humanity. Please sign this petition, to insist the Mackinac County Jail authorities grant my husband a medical bond due to the severity of his condition.
