The Issue

I have personally witnessed the danger of silent light rail trains at grade crossings. It may seem surprising, but currently, there is no federal law requiring light rail vehicles and trains to sound their horns at these intersections. This lack of regulation poses a significant risk to pedestrians and motorists alike.

In comparison, heavy rail trains are mandated by federal law to follow a long-long-short-long horn sequence at grade crossings. This requirement has been effective in alerting people about an approaching train, reducing accidents significantly. According to the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), sounding horns can reduce collisions by 29% - 64%.

The absence of such safety measures for light rail trains is alarming. Every year, hundreds of accidents occur due to insufficient warning systems at grade crossings involving light rail vehicles (Federal Transit Administration). The silence of these vehicles as they approach intersections puts lives in unnecessary danger.

We need our voices heard on this critical issue that affects public safety daily. Let's urge lawmakers to amend the federal law and require all light rail vehicles and trains to sound their horns following the same long-long-short-long sequence that heavy rail trains perform.
