Mandate Lifetime Bans / prision sentences / Public Registers for Convicted Animal Abusers
The Issue
As an avid social media user, I am appalled and heartbroken by the increasing number of animal cruelty incidents reported across various platforms. Our beloved animals should live in a society where they are safe, treated with respect and affection. However, the opposite seems to be happening. This is not only heartbreaking, but also unacceptable. Current laws concerning animal cruelty and neglect seem insufficient and ineffectual, with inadequate penalties that fail to serve as deterrents.
In 2017, there were approximately 17,990 animal cruelty investigations conducted in the UK alone (statistic from RSPCA). This alarming figure reflects the urgency of introducing stricter laws and enforcing stiffer penalties for animal abusers. If we are to stop this trend, more needs to be done. One solution would be to enact legislation ensuring all convicted animal abusers face a lifetime ban on animal ownership and are placed on a registry accessible to the public, a measure which has proved its efficiency in several US states.
We believe that such reforms can provide an additional layer of protection for our animals, and contribute to a more compassionate and loving society. This is an urgent call to authorities to review and revise current animal cruelty laws to include lifetime bans and public registers for animal abusers. Please, sign this petition and help protect innocent animals from suffering further.
