Mandate Life Skills in Schools Including Employability, Money Management and Well-being
The Issue
As concerned citizens who have witnessed the struggles of school leavers unprepared for adult life, we are calling for a change in our education system. Too often, young adults make poor decisions because they lack understanding of basic principles like managing pensions, handling stress and maintaining healthy living habits.
Our current education system focuses heavily on academic achievements but falls short in preparing students for real-life scenarios. According to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), only 38% of adults reach a level where they can manage tasks that require numeracy skills such as calculating interest or percentages - key skills needed to understand pension schemes.
Moreover, the Money and Pensions Service report that only 48% of the UK's young people have received a meaningful financial education', in addition to over three quarters of students surveyed by Youth Parliament who confirmed they would prefer the curriculum to include comprehensive stress management techniques, life-saving skills and even how to effectively deal with grief.
Lastly, with obesity rates tripling over the last four decades according to World Health Organization (WHO), it is clear that there is an urgent need for better education on healthy living habits.
We must equip our youth with these essential life skills before they leave school. By doing so we not only give them tools to navigate adulthood successfully but also contribute towards building healthier communities and economies.
We urge everyone to sign this petition demanding our educational institutions incorporate lessons on pensions, stress management and healthy living into their curriculums. Together we can ensure future generations are well-prepared for adult life.
