A few years ago, my beloved cat was killed by a speeding driver, an incident that received little to no attention or action. Recently, on two separate occasions, I've had the heart-wrenching experience of picking up cats, lifeless, victims of hit-and-run incidents. As an animal lover, these occurrences are not only sickening but they underscore a void in our legal system that needs to be addressed.

In the UK alone, up to 230,000 cats are killed on the roads each year according to Cats Protection, yet there is no legal mandate for drivers to report incidents where a cat has been hit. This leaves countless families unaware of their pet’s fate and countless cats suffering or dying without the urgency of medical intervention that their situation may warrant.

In contrast, current legislation obliges drivers to report accidents involving dogs. We propose implementing similar legal requirements for drivers who have collided with a cat on the roads. This will facilitate immediate care for injured animals and provide closure for families nursing the loss of their dear companions.

In memory of all cats who've lost their lives on the road, and in compassion for their grieving owners, we demand a change in the legislation. The pain experienced through such loss should motivate us to echo this call for justice in the law. Please join us in our fight to make reporting road accidents involving cats a legal requirement.
