Mandate Legal Accountability for Press Shares of Factual and Genuine News

The Issue

The importance of authentic and accurate news reporting cannot be overstated. This cause is particularly personal because my elderly mother, like so many others, is not able to discern how certain news media may distort stories to further their motivations or agenda.

The digital age has brought with it unpredicted speed and shelf-space for information-sharing, but this boon also comes with a risk: the dilution of truth. It has become almost impossible for a person to distinguish between fact and propaganda. Media bias is evident, and studies reveal that this bias can strongly shape public perception. For instance, a report from the Pew Research Center indicates nearly 64% of U.S adults believe fake news has caused "a great deal" of confusion about basic facts of current events.

This is why I believe it is crucial to hold the press accountable for sharing factual, genuine, and accurately represented news. News agencies should bear a legal responsibility to verify and authenticate the news they broadcast. This law could protect the consumers, particularly those like my mother, and uphold journalistic integrity.

Please sign this petition, let's work together to demand truth and transparency from our news agencies. Ensure that factual validation becomes a legal requirement. Protect the everyday reader from misinformation.
