My partner and I are planning to meet with the Queen Anne’s County Commissioners to advocate for mandatory lead testing in private wells and non-public water systems, especially those serving childcare facilities. Recent findings at Queen Anne’s County High School revealed multiple water outlets with lead levels exceeding the state's action level of 5 parts per billion, with one sample reaching as high as 103.5 ppb . While Maryland law mandates lead testing in public and nonpublic schools, childcare centers solely licensed by the Maryland Office of Child Care are currently exempt . This gap leaves many young children vulnerable to lead exposure, which can adversely affect their development. We also aim to ensure that low-income families have access to affordable lead testing kits for their drinking water, recognizing that lead contamination can occur in private wells. By implementing regular testing protocols and providing necessary resources, we can take significant steps toward safeguarding the health of our community's children.
