Mandate Landlords to Change Locks and Keyless Entry Codes After Each Tenant

The Issue

I, like too many others, have experienced the violation of my privacy and safety in my own home. In my case, an unwelcome individual entered my apartment while I was getting dressed.  He saw me completely naked. This intrusion was not due to a break-in but rather a failure to update security measures after a tenant move-out-- a hazard faced by countless renters worldwide.

The frightening scenario that unfolded could have been prevented if landlords were required to change locks or keyless entry codes after a tenant or guest vacates. It is a seemingly small adjustment, but one that can have a significant impact on the privacy and security of tenants.

In America alone, there were more than 2.5 million burglaries in recent years and about 66% of those are home break-ins (CreditDonkey, 2020). The emotional and psychological trauma that victims of such incidents face is immeasurable.

It is time to tighten the security protocols in our rental properties. A home should be a safe haven, not a place where tenants feel vulnerable. We must urge our lawmakers to put this matter at the forefront of their agenda and enact legislation that requires landlords and property management companies to change locks and keyless entry codes after every tenant or guest.

We cannot wait until another individual faces the same violation I did. Let's act now. Sign this petition. Stand for the safety and privacy of all tenants.
