The Issue

Every time I walk down the aisles of my local supermarket, I am haunted by the thought of animals suffering in labs so that I can purchase a simple shampoo bottle or a tube of mascara. It's unfathomable to think that in the 21st century, we still rely on outdated and cruel methods to test products. I find it disgusting that I might inadvertently support animal cruelty because companies lack transparency. It's time for a change.

Animal testing is not only a moral issue, but it's also an outdated practice. According to the Humane Society International, over 500,000 animals suffer and die annually worldwide in cosmetics testing alone. In the UK, more than 3 million animals are used in experiments each year, despite the availability of alternative methods such as in vitro testing, which are often more reliable and humane.

Consumers have a right to know what they are buying. Mandatory labelling on products that have been tested on animals would empower consumers to make informed decisions and could drive the demand for cruelty-free products, encouraging companies to shift towards more ethical practices. Such a move could mirror longstanding initiatives in other industries, like the Fairtrade or organic labels, which have proven successful in increasing industry standards and consumer awareness.

We need to urge the authorities to implement mandatory labelling on all products tested on animals. This small yet significant step can catalyse a transformation in consumer behaviour and corporate ethics, ultimately leading to a decline in animal testing. With your support, we can demand greater transparency and fight for a world where no animal has to suffer for our convenience.
