Mandate Isles of Scilly Council to Fully Fund Post-16 Education/Training
The Issue
Since September 2014 it has been the law for children to remain in education/training until they are 18 however there is no post-16 education available on the Isles of Scilly.
Every child in the UK has the right to education and training up until the age of 18, regardless of location or financial capacity. But the current post-16 education and training arrangement for children from the Isles of Scilly is far from equitable.
The Council of the Isles of Scilly has a statutory duty to support the education and training of all children and ensure they don't experience any financial barriers in accessing the education they are entitled to.
Despite this responsibility, the Council of the Isles of Scilly has persistently neglected to fulfil their post-16 education/training obligations and hasn’t funded ONE SINGLE PENNY from their budget since post-16 education/training became the law.
This situation leaves families burdened with often unbearable financial demands of up to £12k per child per year, to ensure their children’s safety in Ofsted regulated boarding as opposed to the cheaper option of unregulated “digs”. Young learners are being denied the chance to flourish.
It's time that education for all children on the Isles of Scilly is fully funded, reducing the strain on families and ensuring each and every child gets the education they deserve.
Please join us in demanding that the Isles of Scilly Council fulfil their statutory duties to the islands' children immediately by signing and sharing this petition today.
