Mobility scooter users depend heavily on their scooters to maintain a semblance of independence and dignity in their daily lives. However, there's a glaring issue that often disrupts their peace of mind — the lack of legal obligation for insurance companies to offer insurance for these essential vehicles.

Currently, if a mishap occurs, whether it's damage to the scooter or an unfortunate accident involving others, the burden of repair or liability often falls squarely on the scooter user, who is typically living on a fixed income. This can result in unexpected financial hardship and emotional distress, endangering not only their independence but their overall wellbeing.

Mobility scooters, much like cars or motorcycles, are integral to the lifestyle of individuals with disabilities or those who are mobility impaired. Yet, unlike these other forms of transportation, insuring a mobility scooter is neither mandatory nor standard practice for insurance companies in Ireland. Insurance cover is standard across other EU countries and in the UK. Consequently, many users are left unprotected against accidents, theft, or damages.

It's time to advocate for change and ensure that those who depend on mobility scooters have access to the same protections as other vehicle users. By making it a legal obligation for insurance companies to offer coverage for mobility scooters, we can alleviate the financial and emotional burdens faced by countless individuals and families like mine.
