Mandate Insurance Coverage of GLP-1 Medications for PCOS

Mandate Insurance Coverage of GLP-1 Medications for PCOS

The Issue

I’ve battled Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) my whole life—irregular periods, insulin resistance, debilitating migraines, relentless weight struggles, chronic inflammation, and the heart-wrenching challenge of infertility. For years, Metformin has been the standard prescription, yet it hasn’t offered me, or countless others in my shoes, the relief we so desperately need. Meanwhile, GLP-1 medications are transforming lives, proving to be a beacon of hope for those of us with PCOS.

PCOS affects approximately 1 in 10 women of childbearing age, according to reputable sources like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Despite its prevalence, PCOS remains under-researched and under-treated, often overlooked by insurance providers. The consequence? Limited access to effective treatments, forcing many women to endure unnecessary suffering and subpar care.

Unlike Metformin, GLP-1 medications provide more comprehensive benefits for women with PCOS. These include improved weight loss, better hormone regulation, stabilized menstrual cycles, reduced infertility issues, decreased inflammation, and targeted treatment for non-diabetic PCOS-specific insulin resistance. They also serve as an effective prevention tool for prediabetes and diabetes and come with fewer gastrointestinal issues than Metformin.

Insurance companies like TriCare must recognize the unique challenges faced by women with PCOS and acknowledge GLP-1 medications as a vital treatment option. Continued reliance on Metformin limits our choices and future health outcomes. It's time for insurance providers to step up as advocates, ensuring women have access to life-changing medications.

We call upon TriCare and all other insurance companies to update their coverage policies to include GLP-1 medications for treating PCOS, providing equitable and comprehensive healthcare for all women. This change will not only improve lives but also set a precedent for how women's health is valued and treated by insurance providers.

Join me in urging TriCare and other insurers to reconsider their approach to PCOS. Sign this petition to advocate for coverage that aligns with current medical advancements and offers real hope and results for countless women impacted by PCOS every day.
