Mandate Humane Society Contracts for Stray Pets in rural areas
The Issue
In Calumet Co, Wisconsin, and other Countys throught the state the issue of stray pets is increasing, leading to townships to have a town chairperson deal with a stray animal and sometimes that stray animal ends in death by the hands of the town official who are not equipped with handling the stray in an knowledgeable and/or a humane way.
Wisconsin has had at least 4 dogs that we know of intentionally killed by town officials in the last two months. .
Local humane societies are equipped to handle these issues through trained staff, structured facilities, and a strong network of veterinary care. They provide the necessary resources to care for stray animals, facilitating adoptions and health care, thus mitigating the stray animal crisis efficiently. Unfortunately, there is no uniform policy across townships and municipalities in Calumet county to engage these societies, leading to inconsistent handling of stray animals across the region.
By mandating that all townships and municipalities in Calumet County contract with their local humane societies, we could ensure a standardized, humane, and efficient approach to managing the stray pet population. This policy would not only safeguard the well-being of these animals but would also enhance public safety and improve community aesthetics by reducing the number of stray animals on our streets.
According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), communities that effectively manage their stray animal populations see a reduction in local animal control costs and an improvement in pet adoption rates. Implementing such a requirement would mirror the successful policies seen in other regions, fostering a safer and more compassionate environment for both people and pets.
Urge your local leaders to prioritize animal welfare and public safety by signing this petition. Your support can lead to the adoption of humane and systematic solutions, benefiting not only the stray animals but also the citizens of Calumet County. Sign today to make a difference.
