Mandate helmets for all motorcycle passengers and riders
The Issue
On Saturday, September 6th, my son's father was involved in a devastating motorcycle accident that changed our lives forever. The crash left him brain dead, and despite our hopes and prayers, we had to make the excruciating decision to take him off life support the following Wednesday. He was not wearing a helmet. This tragedy could possibly have been prevented if he had been wearing a helmet that day.
Motorcycle accidents remain one of the leading causes of traumatic brain injuries worldwide. In the United States alone, helmet use reduces the risk of head injury by 69% and the risk of death by 42%. However, not all states require helmets for all riders and passengers, leaving countless individuals vulnerable to preventable injuries.
Approximately 1,500 motorcyclists are killed and another 100,000 are injured each year due to head injuries sustained in accidents. These statistics represent real people: fathers, mothers, sons, and daughters who might still be alive and healthy if a helmet law were in place.
We must urge lawmakers to implement mandatory helmet laws for all motorcycle riders and passengers, regardless of age or travel length. This simple legislative change could save thousands of lives, reduce the emotional and financial burden on families, and lower costs for the healthcare system.
We can no longer stand by while preventable tragedies continue to occur. Let's bring attention to this crucial issue and push for a nationwide mandate requiring helmets for everyone on a motorcycle. This change will honor those we've lost and protect the people we love.
Please sign this petition to demand that our leaders make helmet use mandatory for all motorcycle riders and passengers, so that no other family has to endure the heartbreak of losing a loved one in such a preventable manner. Together, we can create a safer future for everyone. Sign and share to make your voice heard and be a part of this life-saving movement.
