Mandate helmet use for ice skating at Strathcona Gardens (Bring back mandatory helmet use)

The Issue

Growing up in Campbell River, BC, Strathcona Gardens was more than just a recreational spot; it was a cornerstone of community life and personal development. Ice skating, whether for fun or competition, played a significant role in our lives. We skated with friends, family, and even went on to influence younger generations who looked up to us and mimicked our actions. However, without mandatory helmet use, these joyous activities pose significant risks not just to seasoned skaters, but especially to youth who are least experienced.

Sadly, stories of head injuries from falls, some minor and some severe, are all too common. These incidents are preventable. According to the CDC, helmets reduce the risk of head injuries by 70% in sports activities similar to ice skating. Head injuries can have long-term impacts, affecting school performance, social interactions, and overall quality of life. For a community that prides itself on nurturing its youth and encouraging public safety, we are falling short with our current policies.

Other communities in British Columbia and across Canada have already made strides in this area. Comox Valley Sports Centre: Helmets are mandatory for all participants in public skates, drop-in hockey, and ice lessons. The City of Burnaby has enacted mandatory helmet regulations for ice skaters at their rinks, and they've witnessed a significant drop in head-related injuries. Implementing a similar policy at Strathcona Gardens not only aligns with best practices but also adds a layer of safety for everyone who uses the rink.

We are calling on the management of Strathcona Gardens and the City of Campbell River to prioritize safety and join the ranks of progressive communities. Mandating helmets can prevent injuries, alleviate concerns for parents, and transform the skating rink into a beacon of safety rather than a risk. It's a small step for us, but a giant leap in ensuring that public safety is the norm, not the exception.

Please sign this petition and advocate for a safer ice skating experience for all at Strathcona Gardens. Your support can make a significant difference in our community.
