The Issue

My brother's life was tragically cut short when he lost his life riding his Harley Davidson. He, like many others, chose not to wear a helmet on that fateful ride because New Mexico law currently makes helmet use optional for adult motorcyclists. This policy, sadly, has contributed to countless unnecessary injuries and fatalities on our roads, a reality I painfully understand and seek to change.

The freedom to choose is deeply valued in our state, but the consequences of this choice when it comes to helmet-wearing can be fatal. Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that helmets are approximately 37% effective in preventing fatal injuries to motorcyclists. This means when worn, they could potentially save hundreds of lives every year. Helmets are not just a precaution; they are a critical line of defense protecting motorcyclists from the severe repercussions of crashes.

By mandating the use of helmets, New Mexico can join the ranks of states actively working to protect its citizens from harm. Enacting a helmet law would not only prevent tragedies similar to what my family has experienced but also reduce the financial burden on emergency services and healthcare systems provoked by motorcycle accidents.

Our loved ones who enjoy the thrill and freedom of riding deserve to come home safe. It is time we prioritize their safety by making helmets a mandatory requirement for all motorcyclists riding in our state.

Sign this petition to urge New Mexico legislators to take a stand for safety by mandating helmet use for all motorcyclists. Together, we can prevent needless loss of life and ensure a safer future for everyone on the road.
