The Issue

It all began one night last summer when I spotted a little hedgehog struggling to navigate through my garden. This tiny creature was searching for a safe route to forage but was blocked by all the fenced gardens. This heartbreaking sight reminded me of the rapidly dwindling hedgehog populations in our area, an issue close to my heart as a long-time resident and nature enthusiast.

Hedgehogs are an integral part of our ecosystem in the UK, helping control pests and encouraging biodiversity. Unfortunately, their numbers have fallen dramatically in recent decades, with a 50% decline in rural areas and a third lost in urban environments since the year 2000, according to the People's Trust for Endangered Species. One major culprit? Our gardens and developments are increasingly closed off from them, creating isolated pockets without a way through.

The solution is both simple and actionable: incorporate "hedgehog highways"—small holes in the base of garden fences—into all new housing developments. These portals need only be 13 x 13 cm, small enough to keep larger pets secure while giving hedgehogs the free movement they desperately need. It’s a minor change with a massive impact, allowing our spiky friends to move freely between gardens to find food and mates.

Some progressive housing developers have already started adopting this idea, but it's time to make it a nationwide requirement. By mandating these highways in all new builds, we can collectively take a huge step toward safeguarding hedgehogs and enhancing our urban biodiversity.

Our natural world is at a critical tipping point, and we all have responsibility to protect it. Please join me in petitioning our local councils and planning authorities to mandate hedgehog highways in all new housing developments across the UK. By signing this petition, we can turn a simple idea into a national standard, ensuring a thriving future for our precious hedgehogs. Sign now to make a difference!
