I am a single mother who travels twice a month with my son to visit his father in another state. We have been on hundreds of flights together. However, recently I was stopped at the airport and accused of child trafficking. I was asked to provide proof that my son was indeed mine - an experience that left me distraught and concerned about the lack of protocols in place.

The reality is that anyone can go online, purchase an airline ticket for any child under any name, and travel without being questioned, as children do not have IDs and birth certificates can be easily faked. This loophole makes it incredibly easy for child trafficking to occur on planes. According to UNICEF, every two minutes a child is being prepared for sexual exploitation - often facilitated by such lax regulations.

To enhance safety, help stop real child trafficking on planes (in our own national airports) and prevent such incidents from happening again - not just to us but also other families with diverse backgrounds or different last names - we propose a requirement for all children traveling by plane to carry government-issued IDs stating both legal parents' names.

This measure will not only protect children but also reassure parents about their children's safety during air travel. It will help airlines establish clear protocols around child passengers and ensure they are traveling with legitimate guardians or parents.

I intend to take this experience and make a difference that we so need in this world, for our kids, and those that are being trafficked. At least it would make it more difficult for real criminals to do so on airline travel.
