I am a student from Ohio who lives in fear due to one sobering fact - our schools lack adequate security. Our school grounds offer vast spaces and multiple opportunities for tragedy like school shootings. There have been numerous reported instances where firearm’s were brought to schools across Ohio, an experience that imparts a bone-chilling fear in every student's heart like mine. This fear turns our places of learning into places of dread.

To combat this issue intelligently, it is necessary to enhance our security by equipping those charged with our care, our teachers, with the tools and knowledge required to respond quickly and effectively to such threats. We are urging Ohio lawmakers to mandate a specialized training for teachers in handling firearms and providing a thorough understanding of officer/military protocols for crisis management.

Interview-based studies have shown that teachers who are well-versed in safety protocols, including firearms usage, can influence a school safety environment positively. Research from the Harvard School of Public Health and Northeastern University has indicated that arming teachers could lead to higher rates of deterrence, identifying potential threats, and immediate response times in instances of school violence.

By allowing teachers to maintain firearms within the classrooms, we are providing a means for immediate response to enhance school safety significantly without infringing on the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens. We are also offering an opportunity for schools to advance safety classes and provide gun safety awareness training and classes for students.
