The Issue

My family hail from a background of poverty, where having enough food was always a struggle. From having to dumpster dive for cans at 4 years old, to having my clothes sewn to ensure I had garments. I’m no stranger to the difficulty some don’t prevail from.

I understand the problem that millions around our country face. But together, we have the capacity to bring about a change. I advocate for a fusion of humanity and law that requires all food establishments to donate their surplus food, perishable or non-perishable, to local homeless shelters or organizations like the Salvation Army.

With over 37 million people, including 11 million children, facing hunger in America (Feeding America), this legislation could mean the difference between starvation and survival for people on our streets.

Furthermore, every year, approximately 40 million tons of food gets wasted in the United States (FDA), which is a significant amount that could otherwise be used to feed those in need. This waste not only represents a missed opportunity to support the vulnerable but also contributes to environmental degradation when it ends up in landfills, creating greenhouse gases.

Thus, by having these establishments donate their unused food, we can help alleviate hunger and reduce the negative environmental impact caused by food waste.

Let's make the world a better place, one meal at a time. Please sign this Petition and let's stop food waste and hunger together.
