Mandate Employers to Respond to Job Applications Regardless of Decision

Mandate Employers to Respond to Job Applications Regardless of Decision
The Issue
Many of us have experienced the frustration and disappointment of applying for jobs without ever hearing back. As a person who has been continuously applying for positions in the job market, I understand the crushing silence that follows each application. This sense of being ignored and invalidated has prompted me to action. Companies should be obligated to respond to each job applicant, regardless of the decision, be it positive or negative.
In a study conducted by CareerBuilder in 2016, 75% of workers who applied to jobs stated they didn't hear back from the employer. This reflects a major gap in communication and courtesy from employers across industries. This lack of response can lead to a decrease in an individual’s self-confidence and motivation levels, making job hunting even more challenging and taxing.
Being ignored after applying for a position can not only be emotionally distressing, but also practically troublesome. Applicants spend considerable time tailoring resumes and cover letters for each position and they deserve at least an acknowledgment of their effort.
I propose that employers who do not respond to job applicants should face fines. This will enforce a level of respect and basic decency, as well as contribute towards better transparency in the job application process.
