Mandate Drivers to Report Accidents Involving Cats and Small Animals

Mandate Drivers to Report Accidents Involving Cats and Small Animals
The Issue
As a devoted animal lover, more specially a cat owner, it disheartens me profoundly to realize that current laws require drivers to report any incidents or accidents involving dogs and other large animals to the authorities, but unsurprisingly overlooking cats and other smaller animals. Our cats and smaller pets are not just pets; they form part of our families. Their loss brings about indescribable sadness and grief.
Regrettably, existing traffic laws do not sufficiently protect smaller pets. Many could have been saved had there been immediate medical attention facilitated by the reporting of such accidents. Although comprehensive national data is hard to find, a study by the Journal of Small Animal Practice estimates that around 250,000 cats were hit by cars in the UK in 2016 alone.
This needs to stop and since 2016 these figures have continued to rise.
It’s estimated that around 230,000 cats are hit by cars every year in the UK, which equates to roughly 630 every single day. A study by insurer PetPlan also found that younger cats are most vulnerable – with half of those struck being between seven months and two years old.
Campaigns to change the law have gained momentum in recent years, with numerous petitions calling for cats to be given the same legal protections as dogs and livestock.
For now, cat owners can often be left without legal recourse when their pets are injured or killed on the road.
Let’s give cat owners a legal standing and to be allowed to see justice for their beloved 4 legged family members.
This petition implores the legislative authorities to rectify this glaring oversight. It is not simply a matter of legal technicality; it's about the compassion and regard for all animals, irrespective of their sizes, demonstrating our shared humanity and respect for all life.
Together, we can ensure that our treasured pets get the protection they deserve. By backing this petition, we can persuade lawmakers to adjust the laws and require drivers to report all incidents involving cats and other smaller animals. Because every pet life matters and it's high time the laws reflected this truth.
For the love of our smaller pets, please sign this petition and demand fair change in our traffic laws.
