Mandate Documented Aggression as Only Grounds for Euthanasia in Animal Shelters

The Issue

I am a passionate animal lover and believe that every animal deserves a chance at life. It is heartbreaking to think that an innocent cat or dog could be put down after just three days because they were not chosen for adoption. This practice is not only cruel but also unnecessary.

We estimate that the number of dogs and cats entering U.S. shelters annually has declined from approximately 7.2 million in 2011. The biggest decline was in dogs (from 3.9 million to 3.1 million).
Each year, approximately 920,000 shelter animals are euthanized (390,000 dogs and 530,000 cats).shelter animals are euthanized each year. This number includes cats and dogs who are healthy, non-aggressive, and capable of being loving pets. The decision to euthanize should not be taken lightly nor used as a means to an end when shelters become overcrowded.

We propose a mandate that would only allow euthanasia in cases where the animal has shown documented aggression, not simply on the word of shelter staff without proof. This would ensure that every pet gets their fair chance at finding a forever home.

By signing this petition, you are advocating for the rights of these animals who cannot speak up for themselves. You are giving them hope and ensuring they receive fair treatment within our nation's shelters. Please sign this petition today to help us make this change happen!
