Mandate detailed ingredient labeling on all foods

Mandate detailed ingredient labeling on all foods

The Issue

As someone with food allergies, navigating the grocery store aisles can feel like walking through a minefield. I, like many others, must scrutinize every label, searching meticulously for hidden dangers that could trigger a severe allergic reaction. The ambiguous term "natural flavors" offers little comfort and even less information. It is an umbrella term that can include a myriad of substances, some of which may be potential allergens. For people like me, knowing exactly what is in the food we consume is not just a preference; it is a necessity for our safety and health.

Currently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) allows companies to use terms like "natural flavors" without requiring them to specify the exact ingredients. This lack of transparency can be dangerous for millions who suffer from food allergies or have dietary restrictions. According to the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Connection Team, 32 million Americans have food allergies, and they send someone to the emergency room every three minutes. Labeling ingredients as "natural flavors" paves the way for confusion and risk, hampering our ability to make informed dietary choices.

Requiring food manufacturers to provide a comprehensive, clearly labeled ingredient list can significantly mitigate these risks. Instead of vague groupings, specific and detailed labels should be made mandatory for all food products. This change will ensure greater transparency and help safeguard millions of consumers.

In other countries, such as the United Kingdom and Canada, there are stringent regulations that require detailed food labeling, reducing the ambiguity found in terms like "natural flavors." It is time for the United States to follow suit and enhance food transparency to protect its citizens.

We propose that the FDA amend its regulations to require food manufacturers to list all ingredients, including those currently categorized under "natural flavors." This small step will have a monumental impact on those with food allergies, promoting a safer and more inclusive food environment.

Sign this petition to urge the FDA to mandate detailed ingredient labeling, ensuring that no more hidden allergens lurk under the guise of "natural flavors." Your signature can make a difference and pave the way for increased transparency and safety for all consumers.
