The Issue

My name is Adaiah, and I am a Grade 11 student at Denver East High School. As part of the Unified Class Peer-to-Peer, I have the privilege of mentoring students who use wheelchairs. However, I've witnessed firsthand how these students are routinely forced to use the back entrance of the building due to the lack of accessibility features at the front.

This situation is not just inconvenient; it serves as a constant reminder of how far we are from achieving true inclusion and accessibility. The current infrastructure at Denver East High School does not meet the basic requirements outlined by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which guarantees equal access to public facilities for individuals with disabilities.

I believe that everyone should have the same experience when entering our school. It’s not just about convenience; it’s about fairness. Every student, regardless of their physical abilities, deserves to have the same opportunity to enter through the front entrance and to feel equally respected and valued. The current situation creates an unnecessary division that makes some students feel different or excluded, and that’s something we can and should change. I believe it is crucial that Denver East High School installs a wheelchair ramp at the front entrance. By doing so, we will:

Provide equal access for all students, faculty, and visitors.
Create a more inclusive and welcoming environment.
Align with the legal requirements set forth by the ADA.

This is a simple change that would make a world of difference for students who use wheelchairs and for our entire community. Everyone deserves the same respect and convenience when entering our school. It is not too much to ask. Please join me in signing this petition to make Denver East High School a more accessible and inclusive space for everyone.

Thank you for your support.
