Mandate Daily Recess for Middle and High School Students in Fayette County
The Issue
How would you feel to know that your Fayette County Public Schools Middle or High School Student student is facing an immense amount of academic pressure without an adequate break? Daily recess provides students with a recharge so that they can perform at their highest possible academic level in school.
While some might say recess will decrease academic performance in teens, Research from multiple sources says otherwise. Research from the American Academy of Pediatrics has shown that recess improves cognitive performance and the CDC recommends that adolescents should have at least 60 minutes or more of physical activity each day.
FCPS elementary students have two 15-minute recess blocks per day. However, once FCPS students are promoted to Middle and High School they no longer get recess due to "a lack of schedule time". However, I believe that there is plenty of time in the day for a recess period such as before or after lunch, or at the beginning or end of the day.
By implementing daily recess periods in our public schools, students will learn to have a more healthy lifestyle while improving their academic performance. Take action now by signing this petition and contributing to the well-being of thousands of Lexington teens!
