Mandate Comprehensive Security Measures at UPMC Hospitals

The Issue

I was deeply shaken by the incident of violence at the UPMC Memorial campus on Saturday, February 22, 2025. This tragic event is not an isolated incident but part of an ongoing issue, an alarming pattern of violence against healthcare workers. The current safety measures at UPMC hospitals are inadequate. Therefore, we're calling for mandatory security guards and metal detectors at all entrances, and thorough screening of all incoming visitors and employees for weapons.

Hospital violence is on the rise, with healthcare workers being 4 times more likely to face workplace violence than other private-sector industries, according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. It is past time for UPMC to take tangible actions to protect the safety of its patients and staff.

A well-implemented, rigorous security system can greatly reduce the risk of violence and ensure a safer environment for all within the hospital premises. Not only does it protect the hospital staff and patients, but it also affords an essential peace of mind to the families of patients and the community at large.

Please support our call to UPMC to take the necessary steps to mitigate these issues. We ask for you to sign this petition and urge UPMC to prioritize the safety of its staff, patients, and visitors. Your signature has the power to bring about this critical change. Sign this petition today.
