As a volunteer, I'm forever haunted by the dozens of pleading, terrified animal eyes that encounter me daily. This situation has arisen from individuals who for various reasons, have decided to surrender their pets. Our society needs a serious wake-up call about this matter.

From the personal side of my experiences, I've observed animals that once felt loved and secure, suddenly thrown into an environment they don't understand. This fear, this hopelessness, would surely break the hearts of pet surrenderers if they could see it for themselves.

Every year, nearly 7.6 million companion animals enter shelters in the United States, with around 3.3 million being dogs and 3.2 million being cats - numbers that could be reduced drastically if all pet owners fully understood the implications and anguish of their decisions. Most of these innocent animals are not adopted again, instead they are euthanized! 

Therefore, this petition calls for a law that mandates community service in animal shelters for those surrendering their pets. This will serve not only as a deterrent to those considering surrender, but also as crucially needed education about the harsh reality faced by the animals after surrender.
