My home, along with at least six others in my apartment complex, became a living nightmare due to an infestation of bed bugs. The corporate office of the complex decided to cut costs by treating only one vacant unit with heat treatment and chemicals, twice. Adjacent units were not inspected or treated as part of their cost-saving measures. Despite the denial from the corporate office manager about this approach due to cost concerns and an expressed desire to prevent further spread, it led directly to our homes being overrun by these pests.

This is not just a personal issue; it's a statewide problem that needs immediate attention. Ohio landlord-tenant law currently lacks specific guidelines regarding how insect infestations like bed bugs should be handled. This lack of clarity puts tenants at risk and allows landlords to avoid responsibility.

We, the undersigned, express our grave concern regarding the pervasive issue of bed bugs within our community. The relentless presence of bed bugs in our living spaces has become a pressing matter that demands immediate attention and comprehensive action. These tiny yet formidable pests not only disrupt our peace of mind but also jeopardize our health and well-being. The infestations have grown beyond isolated incidents, creating an untenable living environment for residents. We implore the responsible authorities to prioritize and allocate resources for a thorough and effective eradication plan, ensuring the swift elimination of bed bugs and the restoration of a safe and comfortable living space for all. It is our collective plea that urgent measures be taken to address this critical issue and safeguard the health and tranquility of our community.

We need legislation that sets minimum standards for handling such infestations - standards that protect tenants' rights and well-being while also holding landlords accountable for providing safe living conditions.

Ohio urgently requires legislation to safeguard and regulate the rights of tenants, mandating that landlords address infestations in all surrounding areas when a bed bug outbreak occurs.
