Every bottle of alcohol sold should carry warnings about its potentially detrimental health effects, just like cigarette packs do. As someone who nearly lost my life to alcoholism, I am astoundingly aware of the dangers this substance poses. The fact that my story is not unique only serves to amplify the need for this mandate - there is a death every 10 seconds due to alcohol, according to the World Health Organization. Despite these alarming statistics, information about the impact of alcohol on our health is not as prominently displayed or publicized as it should be. Alcohol consumption has been linked to more than 60 diseases, including liver cirrhosis and various types of cancer, as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention points out. Yet, these facts are not graphically represented on alcohol packaging, as they are on cigarette packs. It's high time we started treating alcohol with the same caution as we do other dangerous substances. Every individual has a right to be fully informed about the potential risks before making a decision that could impact their health and wellbeing. That's why I urge lawmakers to mandate clear, comprehensive warnings about the health effects of alcohol on all alcoholic beverage packaging.
