The Issue

Living in a bustling metro city like Bangalore as a software engineer, finding time to cook can be quite the challenge. For many of us in similar professions, food delivery platforms have become an essential part of our daily routine. As a vegetarian, paneer plays a crucial role in my diet, serving as one of my primary sources of protein. However, there is a growing issue that I, and many others, face when relying on these platforms: the lack of transparency between dairy paneer and its analogue counterpart.

In India, where vegetarian diets are prevalent, the distinction between dairy and analogue paneer is significant, not just in taste but also in nutritional value, particularly protein content. Dairy paneer, made from milk, offers a good source of protein, whereas analogue paneer, often made from vegetable oils and other non-dairy ingredients, does not provide the same nutritional benefits.

The current standard allows both types to be marketed simply as 'paneer', misleading consumers who are unaware of the vast differences. The implications of this are particularly concerning for vegetarians who rely on paneer to meet their dietary protein needs. This lack of clear labeling directly affects our health and dietary goals, which is why it is imperative to address this issue.

I am calling upon food delivery platforms and government bodies to take responsibility and mandate restaurants and cloud kitchens to explicitly disclose regarding whether their paneer offerings are dairy-based or analogue.

With the growing influence of food delivery services, they have the unique opportunity to lead the charge by setting standards for transparency and accountability within the food industry. With the ever evolving citizen needs, government bodies can have yet another opportunity to pitch in and serve the nation.

Join me in urging food delivery platforms, FSSAI, and other relevant authorities to prioritize consumer rights and nutritional transparency. By signing this petition, you contribute to a movement that supports informed consumer choices and making India healthy. Please sign and share :)
