Mandate - Clear Carbohydrate Labeling on All Food Items for Diabetics
The Issue
My son has recently been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, a condition that requires meticulous monitoring of carbohydrate intake. This is a challenge many families face, as current food labeling practices often lack clear information about carbohydrate content.
Diabetes affects over 4.3 million people in the United Kingdom alone (CDC, 2020). For these individuals and their families, knowing the exact carbohydrate content of foods is crucial for managing blood sugar levels and preventing potentially life-threatening complications.
We are calling for all food items sold in stores or served in fast food establishments/restaurants to clearly display their carbohydrate content. This simple change could make a world of difference to those living with diabetes.
Just imagine yourself, nice day out and you see a bakery with delicious treats or a new food establishment you would really like to try but you have no idea what the carb intake is.
As a diabetic you cannot simply just enjoy a treat without considering the consequences, the impact of prolonged high blood sugar leads to DKA which my son experienced on his diagnosis, or having too low blood sugar can have implications such as passing out, (hypo).
If we are to see Calories clearly labelled as a health benefit surely Carbohydrates is also a health benefit.
By signing this petition, you are supporting millions of diabetics and their families who struggle daily to manage this chronic condition. Let's make life easier for them by advocating for clearer food labels! Please sign this petition today!
