As a student attending Binghamton City High School, I experienced firsthand the dangers presented by the unsalted walkways in and around the school precinct. The neglect of this fundamental safety measure puts students, staff, and visitors at risk of slipping and falling during the icy winter seasons.

In the United States, over 1 million Americans are admitted to the hospital for injuries related to a slip and fall, with ice being one of the leading causes as per the National Floor Safety Institute. Ensuring safe passage in and around the school grounds, especially during winter, is paramount not only for those commuting on foot but for the wider community.

I believe that our school, like other public establishments, should prioritize the safety of its populace by fulfilling its responsibility in ensuring that walkways are adequately salted whenever necessary. This small act could prevent the thousands of falls, and injuries that occur annually due to icy conditions.
