The Issue

In a tragedy that has shattered our lives, my brother was killed in a drunk driving accident by someone being reckless. It is a heartbreaking reality that his daughter, whom he never got the chance to meet, was born six weeks after he was taken from us. This story is not unique, as many families across the nation endure the loss and pain inflicted by such unnecessary acts of negligence.

Under the current laws, there is no automatic provision that requires individuals who cause the death of a parent in a drunk driving incident to contribute financially to the upbringing of the child left behind. This leaves grieving families, already overwhelmed by their loss, struggling to provide for children who have lost a parent and a primary source of financial support.

We're calling on lawmakers in every state to change this. We propose that anyone who kills a parent in a drunk-driving accident be required, by law, to pay child support for the children affected. This necessary financial responsibility should be as automatic as the legal consequences already in place for such reckless behavior.

This change would offer a measure of justice and support to the children and families affected by these tragedies. Protecting children should be a priority. They deserve stability and security after facing such a devastating loss.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 10,000 people die each year due to alcohol-impaired driving crashes. This devastating reality means thousands of children might grow up without a parent, simply because someone chose to drive under the influence.

By enacting a law mandating child support in these situations, we can help ensure that those responsible are held accountable for the long-term impact of their actions. Let us strive for a future where our laws reflect a commitment to justice and care for the most vulnerable.

We implore you to join us in supporting this change. Every signature counts, and with enough voices, we can push for legislation that makes a real difference in the lives of families affected by DUI fatalities. Please sign this petition and help secure a better future for children of drunk driving victims. Together, we can make a meaningful impact.
