Mandate Cameras in Special Needs Classrooms to Prevent Abuse

The Issue

My son and some classmates, who have special needs and are non-verbal, were allegedly abused by a teacher — a person meant to nurture and protect him. It's heart-wrenching to know he could not voice his pain. A mother should never be in a position where she can't protect her child, especially in a space meant for learning and growth. Outrageously, this isn't an isolated incident. According to the U.S. Department of Education, during the 2015-16 school year, the rate of serious incidents involving restraint was over 2.7 times higher for students with disabilities than those without. Action needs to be taken to protect children like my son and his friends. Implementing surveillance cameras in special needs classrooms would be significant step toward preventing and addressing such horrors. Lawmakers and school administrators must recognize the urgency and significance of this matter. Lack of verbal communication should not equate to helpless invisibility. Let's give our children a voice when they can't speak for themselves. Please sign this petition, and let's keep our children safe in school.
