Mandate Bird-Safe Installations for All New Solar Panels

Mandate Bird-Safe Installations for All New Solar Panels
The Issue
As a passionate wildlife advocate and bird rehabilitator, I am frequently confronted with heartbreaking situations involving distressed birds and their young trapped beneath solar panels. This is due to mesh being installed long after the panels have been set up, often when birds have already made nests underneath.
Many households end up fed up with countless nesting birds under their solar panels and end up taking the law into their own hands. Often resulting in unqualified tradesmen attempting to remove active nests, anling with unregulated and dangerous mesh being installed.
Under the Wildlife Act, it is illegal to entrap birds, cause unnecessary suffering and to disturb active nests.
However, this law is not effectively enforced in the context of solar panel installations. The result? Countless innocent creatures suffer needlessly.
Solar energy has become an increasingly popular choice for many households and businesses seeking to reduce their carbon footprint.
While this growth in renewable energy use is commendable, we must ensure that it does not come at the expense of our local wildlife populations and cause unnecessary suffering. By requiring all solar panel companies and installers to include regulated bird mesh as standard practice during initial installation rather than as an afterthought, we can prevent regular cruelty and entrapment of birds. Along with keeping homes safe and secure from future nesting issues.
We are calling on lawmakers to introduce legislation that mandates these changes immediately - because every life matters, no matter how small or feathered it may be.
Please sign this petition today and help us protect our wildlife from unnecessary harm caused by human progress.
