The Issue

Growing up in Idaho, I always felt that something essential was missing from public school history classes—an understanding of the profound impact that the Bible has had on the formation of our nation. The Bible is more than just a religious text; it is a cornerstone of Western civilization. Its principles have been woven into the very fabric of American government and societal values. I believe that learning about the Bible's influence on America's founding documents and protected freedoms is crucial for students to gain a comprehensive understanding of our nation's history.

Currently, schools in Idaho do not require the Bible as a part of the American history curriculum, leaving a significant gap in our children's education. This exclusion overlooks the essential role that Judeo-Christian values played in shaping the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. As someone deeply committed to ensuring educational completeness, it is my earnest desire to see the importance of the Bible highlighted within our history courses—fully acknowledging its contributions to the liberties we hold dear.

According to numerous historical sources, including writings from the Founding Fathers themselves, references to Biblical texts are ubiquitous in early American political writing. Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and many others have spoken about the influence of Christian teachings on the concepts of liberty and justice. These are undeniable facts that should be explored in classrooms so that students can better appreciate the origins of their nation’s values.

Incorporating Bible study into American history doesn't inherently mean advocating religious beliefs in schools, but rather recognizing the text's historical significance. By adopting this change, Idaho would set a precedent that acknowledges a fuller, more nuanced view of history. Educators can approach this topic objectively and facilitate a balanced, academic examination of the Bible’s role in history.

Therefore, I urge the Idaho Department of Education to mandate the inclusion of the Bible as an integral part of the history curriculum. Let us provide our students with a more complete educational experience and equip them with the broader understanding needed to become informed and engaged citizens.
