As a disabled person and a mother, I know firsthand the challenges faced when traveling as a disabled individual, especially when using buses. It's incredibly frustrating to witness bus drivers who lack proper training in handling the needs of disabled passengers, deteriorating our travel experiences and presenting a constant battle for us to advocate for our basic rights. It should not be the sole responsibility of the disabled community to ensure that our travel rights are respected.
It's time for change in the travel industry, notably in the bus sector. Bus and travel companies must be properly mandated and regulated to ensure drivers are thoroughly trained and accountable. These drivers need to know how to meet the needs of disabled passengers, ensuring we have a fair, dignified, and comfortable journey each time we travel.
Unfortunately, many disabled individuals, including myself, have experienced situations where our needs were overlooked or outright dismissed by bus drivers. This not only violates our rights but also creates unnecessary stress and anxiety when we travel. According to a survey by Scope, a disability equality charity in the UK, across various modes of transport, buses were identified as particularly challenging, with 45% of disabled people reporting they face difficulties on a daily basis.
Our goal is to ensure that bus companies implement standardized training programs focusing on disability etiquette for all drivers. This includes understanding various disabilities and how to assist passengers accordingly. Legal frameworks should be strengthened to penalize companies that fail to adhere to these regulations and to hold individual drivers accountable when they neglect their duties.
