My name is Illie, I am 14 years old and I am a type 1 diabetic. Every day, I navigate the challenges of managing my blood sugar levels while trying to focus on my education. However, when my blood sugar drops too low, it can be dangerous and there are times when I become unable to take care of myself. This is not just about me - there are thousands of students like me who would feel safer and more comfortable in class if there was someone trained to help us manage our diabetes.

Currently, schools rely on first aid staff for medical emergencies but sometimes there isn't time to get them. It's crucial that all teachers and staff have basic knowledge about diabetes and how to treat low blood sugars. That's a significant number of students who could potentially face a life-threatening situation at school without immediate help.

Therefore we urge educational authorities nationwide to mandate basic diabetes training for all school staff members. This will not only ensure the safety of diabetic students but also foster an environment where they can concentrate on learning without constant worry about their health.
