Mandate balanced teaching methods in Northshore School District

Mandate balanced teaching methods in Northshore School District
The Issue
As a current student at BHS, I have witnessed firsthand the growing over-reliance on digital technology in education within the Northshore School District. Like many of my fellow classmates, I feel this shift is detracting from our intellectual growth by stripping away our opportunities to cultivate critical thinking and creativity. Rather than enhancing our learning experience, the increasing focus on digital assignments and testing is diluting our education, leading to concerns about falling IQ levels and a lack of essential life skills.
Digital devices, while a powerful tool for learning, should not be the cornerstone of our educational system. Studies show that excessive use of technology in the classroom can result in decreased focus, lower retention rates, and a significant reduction in students' ability to think independently and critically. According to reports, students are spending an average of 7 hours per day on screens, which includes both educational and non-educational activities. This can lead to various issues, including reduced social interaction skills and increased levels of anxiety and depression among students.
It is crucial that our schools implement a more balanced approach that incorporates both digital and traditional learning methods. By reintroducing paper assignments and allowing teachers more flexibility in crafting their curriculum, we can foster an environment that encourages deeper engagement and nurtures critical thinking. This requires abandoning rigid, one-size-fits-all curriculums and instead, enabling teachers to use their expertise to tailor lessons to best fit their students' needs.
Additionally, it's vital schools enforce stricter measures regarding student behavior and accountability, allowing teachers the reasonable latitude to discipline. This offers a more structured environment where students can thrive and feel secure.
We aren't advocating for the removal of technology in schools; rather, we demand a thoughtful integration that emphasizes its use as a supplementary tool rather than the primary mode of learning. By making these changes, we hope to see an enhancement in curriculum standards for both students and staff, ultimately leading to a more dynamic and engaging educational experience.
Join me in urging the Northshore School District to rethink their current educational model and prioritize the development of critical thinking and practical life skills. Sign this petition to call for balanced teaching methods that provide a comprehensive education capable of adapting to the needs of all students.
