Mandate ASL Interpretation for News Broadcasts to Aid Deaf and Hard of Hearing Communities

The Issue

As a Deaf Advocacy intern and a Social Work student at Gallaudet University, I witness the disparities in access to communication between Deaf and hearing worlds every day. The lack of American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation on news broadcasts is one such glaring disparity. This petition calls for PHLgovTV (formerly Channel 64), to provide ASL interpretation at the bottom of their screens during broadcasts, enabling Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities in Philadelphia, PA, USA, to access local information.

According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), approximately 15% of American adults (37.5 million) aged 18 and over report some trouble hearing. Despite these significant numbers, our media outlets continue to marginalize this community by not providing adequate accessibility features like ASL interpretation.

Philadelphia's news channel, PHLgovTV, broadcasts news such as city services, attractions and activities. These are subjects that ALL Philadelphia residents should have access to.

By mandating ASL interpretation on PHLgovTV (formerly Channel 64), we can bridge this gap in communication accessibility. It's time we recognize that everyone has an equal right to be informed about their local community events or emergencies regardless of their hearing abilities.

Join us in urging PHLgovTV in Philadelphia, PA, USA - let's make sure they understand the importance of including everyone when broadcasting vital information by providing ASL interpretations on screen. Please sign this petition today!
