Mandate Animal Shelters to Cease Euthanasia for Space and Implement Spay/Neuter Policies

The Issue

As someone who has always rescued my beloved pets from shelters, I am deeply disturbed by the current crisis in our animal shelters. Far too many innocent lives are being ended prematurely, not due to medical issues, but simply due to lack of space or stress-related behaviors. This is a heartbreaking reality that we must work together to change.

Our petition calls for all animal shelters to stop euthanizing animals due to space constraints or kennel stress. Instead, these facilities should  transfer the over capacity animals to other shelters in our nation who have space or provide adequate housing, food, and non-medical care for each animal under their protection until they find a forever home.

To facilitate a spay and neutered community, the government run shelters should offer free spay/neuter for citizens and rescue organizations to reduce overpopulation of stray animals further straining our already overwhelmed shelters, state-run facilities.

Lastly, local governments must take responsibility in controlling pet population by ceasing the issuance of new breeding permits while voiding inactive ones. Unpermitted breeding should be met with hefty fines - a minimum of $10k as deterrent.

According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty Animals (ASPCA), approximately 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized each year in America alone (670k dogs; 860k cats). This staggering number could be significantly reduced if our proposed measures were implemented nationwide.

This issue is personal to me because I have seen firsthand how precious these lives are - every life saved makes a world of difference not only for the animal but also their adoptive family. Let's change this broken system together and address this issue at its core so we can save more lives.
