Mandate All Welsh Councils to Register and Scan Deceased Cats and Dogs found on roadways.
The Issue
I am a pet owner who has experienced the heartbreak of losing a beloved cat. My cherished feline companion, despite being insured and chipped, disappeared mysteriously. His damaged collar was found three miles away from home, but his fate remains unknown. This personal tragedy underscores the importance of treating all pets equally when it comes to their safety.
In England there is a bill currently being considered, Gizmo’s Law, regarding the scanning of deceased cats. Highways England have stated that every effort is made to scan cats found deceased on roads, whereas I was informed, when enquiring about my lost cat in Wales, that ‘deceased cats were put into a bin bag and deposited in landfill’. Cats should be given the same respect as dogs. The pain of not knowing what happened to my cat could have been avoided if such regulations were in place.
According to RSPCA statistics, 71% of households in Wales own a pet (RSPCA Paw Report 2020). These animals are loved members of our families who deserve equal treatment under the law as those in England do.
I urge you to support this petition calling for all Councils in Wales to be required by law to register and scan all cats and dogs found deceased on our highways or in public places. This will ensure that no other pet owner has to suffer through the uncertainty that I have faced since my cat's disappearance.
Please sign this petition today - let's give peace of mind back to Welsh pet owners!
