I, like many of us in our community, have personally seen the harsh impact of cold, unrelenting weather on those less fortunate. Every day, we pass by those who sleep in parks, under bridges, anywhere they can find a semblance of refuge, deprived of even the most basic human right to warmth. Turning warming facilities into overnight centers could genuinely change this harsh reality.

According to the National Coalition for the Homeless, at least 700 people experiencing or at risk of homelessness die each year due to hypothermia (National Coalition for the Homeless, 2019). These figures are a stark reminder that our current approach remains inadequate. Thus, it's crucial for our warming facilities not to limit their operations during daytime only but to expand into overnight centres to provide a safe, warm place throughout the challenging nights, especially during winter months when temperatures drop dramatically.

With volunteers, support, and the right resources, we can transform these facilities into havens for those in need. It's more than just offering a warm room – it's about demonstrating our shared humanity, dignity, and care for our fellow community members.
