Mandate All Schools to Implement a Weekly "Bring Your Pet to School" Policy

The Issue

No one can deny the crucial role pets play in our lives. They are our companions, confidantes, and therapists, providing comfort on overcast days. The American Pet Products Association (APPA) states that 67% of U.S households have at least one pet (APPA, 2019-2020). Recognizing this fact, we ask all schools to adopt a policy allowing students to bring their pets to school at least once a week.

Multiple studies highlight the benefits of human-animal interaction, especially in educational settings. According to the National Institute of Health, interacting with animals has been shown to decrease levels of cortisol (a stress-related hormone) and lower blood pressure (NIH, 2018). These positive effects could undoubtedly contribute to a less stressful school environment.

Moreover, such a policy could also integrate compassion-based education into our school system, encouraging our students to be responsible, empathetic, and caring individuals. We urge all schools to consider implementing a "bring your pet to school" day once a week, for the benefit of our students and their pets alike.
