The Issue

In 1996, my friend's life changed forever when she was left quadriplegic after a tragic gunshot wound. Since then, facing the world in a wheelchair, she's encountered barriers that many of us never have to consider. One of the most significant obstacles she faces is the lack of ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant access in numerous businesses and public spaces. This isn't just an inconvenience—it's a direct limitation on her ability to participate in community life, attend events, and engage with organizations.

My friend is not alone in facing such challenges. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, over 61 million adults in the United States live with a disability, and many of them require accommodations such as ramps, elevators, and properly designed restrooms to access basic services and participate in day-to-day activities. Unfortunately, despite the ADA being law for over three decades, compliance is inconsistent. More than one in five adults with disabilities report not going to much-needed businesses because of accessibility issues.

Making ADA access mandatory in all businesses, regardless of their size, is a necessary step towards ensuring equity for all individuals. The cost of basic modifications like installing ramps or widening doorways pales in comparison to the human cost of exclusion. Studies have shown that businesses that are accessible report a noticeable increase in customer numbers—many people benefit from these changes, including parents with strollers, elderly individuals, and those momentarily impaired by temporary injuries.

We propose that local government officials and lawmakers enhance enforcement of ADA compliance by conducting regular inspections and offering incentives for small businesses that make these changes. By holding businesses accountable, we can create a community that values inclusion and respects the right of every individual to have access to public and private spaces.

My friend, and millions like her, deserve the freedom to live life fully, without the constant worry of being unable to enter a building or use a service. This is an issue of dignity, fairness, and respect. Therefore, I urge you to join me in fighting for mandatory ADA access in all businesses.
