My mother, like many hardworking Texans, often toils from 9-5 in a clinic without access to a lunch break or even bathroom breaks. This unacceptable treatment of employees is not only hard on their physical and mental health, but it significantly reduces productivity and employee morale. Ancient labor laws in the state of Texas currently do not require employers to provide their employees with a lunch or meal break. Unlike 20 other states that do ensure such worker rights, Texas falls short in this department, causing harm to a large majority of its workforce. In fact, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures, Texas is one of the 29 states that does not mandate meal breaks for employees. This requires immediate attention and a call for change. No hardworking individual should be denied a basic human necessity such as a break to eat or use the restroom during their workday.
