The Issue

Students are struggling in silence, unnoticed by a system that is stretched too far to take care of each and every student. We've watched as school counselors, who are vital components of student's education and wellbeing, are overwhelmed with excessive caseloads. Counselors are overworked, handling far too many students in one given school year. This is not just a personal issue for us, but one that impacts thousands of families across the state of Nevada.

The current student to counselor ratios in our public schools is very high. According to the American School Counselor Association, the recommended student-to-counselor ratio is 250:1. However, recent data shows that the states ratio is 450:1. This discrepancy results in less time for individualized attention for each student, increasing the chances of missing warning signs and unaddressed mental health issues. We should do better.

By advocating for a state policy change mandating a 250:1 counselor-to-student ratio in all public high schools, we can provide much-needed assistance to our counselors and ensure that each student receives the individualized care and attention needed.

Please stand with us, advocate for students, and lend your voice to this critical cause. Sign this petition to help mandate a 250:1 counselor-to-student ratio in all public high schools in Nevada.
