I have been working in the service industry for over 25 years, and so have many of my colleagues. We've seen the ups and downs, but lately, it feels like we're being taken advantage of when it comes to tips. It's time for a change.

In Oakbrook Terrace, IL, USA where we live and work, tipping is customary but not mandatory. This leaves us at the mercy of customers' discretion which often falls short of our expectations and needs. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that tipped workers are twice as likely to experience poverty compared to other workers (Bureau of Labor Statistics). This is largely due to inconsistent or inadequate tipping practices.

We propose a mandate requiring all checks in restaurants and similar establishments to include a 20% gratuity by default. This would ensure fair compensation for service industry workers who rely heavily on tips as part of their income.

This move isn't unprecedented - several restaurants across the country have already implemented similar policies with positive results (National Restaurant Association). It's time Oakbrook Terrace follows suit.
